FOUR people died, while six others were seriously injured when a haulage truck they were travelling in overturned in Chipinge last Friday. The truck was carrying 17 tonnes of wheat.

The accident occurred near the 45km peg along the Birchenough Bridge-Mt Selinda Road at around 6.30pm. Police said the truck had 18 passengers on board who had been offered a lift.

Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba, confirmed the accident.

"Police would like to confirm the death of four people in a road traffic accident which occurred near the 45km peg along the Birchenough Bridge-Mt Selinda Road on October 15, 2015," she said. She said Moses Bomba was driving the truck with a trailer loaded with 17 tonnes of wheat.

"On approaching the 45km peg, the driver lost control of the truck and it veered off the road to the left, overturned and landed on its roof. Four people died on the spot and six others were injured while eight others escaped unhurt," Snr Asst Comm Charamba said.

She said the injured were taken to Chipinge Hospital for treatment.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said they were deeply concerned with the loss of innocent lives on the roads and urged motorists to avoid speeding and to exercise caution when driving.

Last month, 17 people were killed while several others were injured in two days in road traffic accidents in Gweru and Marondera.

Of the 17, 12 died when a commuter omnibus they were travelling in veered off the road and overturned along the Gweru-Lower Gweru Road.

The other five people died when a commuter omnibus was involved in a head-on collision with a truck along the Harare-Mutare Road.
