Shona politicians fear a political stalemate which will lead to confrontation that would quickly entangle the military/ security forces and pit the Shona ethnic sub-group against each other. This was revealed in in a leaked cabled and attributed to a former Zanu-PF MP David Butau.
In a meeting that the former MP had with Ambassador Dell and minutes leaked to the public domain by Wikileaks, Butau, who is from the same Shona ethnic sub-group as Vice President Joyce Mujuru and reportedly employs one of the Mujuru daughters at his investment company, Dande noted that the Mujuru faction feared a Shona against Shona confrontation.
Butau outlined three possible scenarios for the near term which they are afraid of:
1) continued Mugabe rule and economic decline that would be unsustainable;
2) a reformed, Mujuru-led, ZANU-PF coming to office that would restore economic stability;
or
3) a stalemate leading to confrontation that would quickly entangle the military/security forces and pit the Shona ethnic sub-groups against each other.
This revelation gives credence to a theory that asserts that Shona leaders are not united and the fall of Mugabe might spark an uncontrollable Shona against Shona rebellion.
There is public opinion that after Mugabe there are chances that Shona sub-groups will fragment, the Manyikas will want to be led by a Manyika, the Zezurus will also want the same so are the other groups.
