Masvingo Province is battling to maintain its road network because it has only one grader that services the whole province, Provincial Coordinator for District Development Fund (DDF), Marasa Gutukunhuwa has said.
Gutukunhuwa said this at a meeting at Masvingo Civic Centre convened on Saturday by the Minister of Transport, Communication and Infrastructural Development Joram Gumbo to review road maintenance work in the province.
Gutukunhuwa said that DDF takes care of 3 810 km and that cannot be completed by one grader. He said the province needs at least three graders.
He also said that most of the roads in the province have outlived their lifespans.
Minister Gumbo was accompanied on the trip by the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) Board Chairperson Albert Mugabe, Chief Executive Officer for ZINARA Engineer Moses Juma and the Principal Director Engineer Eric Gumbi.
The meeting saw chief executive officers from each district giving reports on road maintenance. It was also attended by council chairpersons and councillors and Members of Parliament.
The Minister of State for Masvingo, Shuvai Mahofa also attended the meeting.
Equipment like tractors, trailers are few and also they need spares, said several CEOs during the meeting.
Minister Gumbo said his main was to meet with the road authorities in Masvingo province to hear from them their challenges and progress they have made so far with their road programmes.
"The reason why I have visited this area is to see and hear from the local authorities progress and challenges they with their roads maintenance work," said Gumbo.
He said he was going to sit down with officials from his ministry and ZINARA to come up with a work plan to rehabilitate some of the roads in the three provinces he has visited.
