A commemorative dinner was held in Masvingo province for the late Vice President Dr Simon Vengai Muzenda as his family, politicians and business people went down memory lane and celebrated the life of the national hero.
Fondly known as the 'Soul of the Nation,' Dr Muzenda died on the 20th of September in 2003 but his legacy lives on.
To the rest of the nation, he might just have been a politician, but to his children he was a strict disciplinarian with love.
The dinner saw one of Dr Muzenda's sons, Chikwerete taking the guests down memory lane as he reminisced on how his father loved to eat round nuts and mice, a delicacy which the children still partake in now and again.
"My father liked mice and round nuts. He always encouraged us to follow the straight and narrow path . While he was a disciplinarian, he disciplined us in love," he said.
The dinner was preceded by a golf and cricket tournament which will now be held every year.
Tsitsi Muzenda , daughter to the late Vice President, said they appreciate the efforts by the Masvingo community to keep alive their father's legacy.
She however believes that more can be done to ensure Dr Muzenda's legacy lives on.
Mbuya Maud Muzenda, wife to the late Vice President, also paid tribute to the organisers of the golf tournament and dinner event .
The guest of honour at the event, Masvingo Province Minister of State, Shuvai Mahofa, said they will come together to discuss what more can be done to ensure Dr Muzenda's legacy alive.
"Dr Muzenda was a man of the people who treated all with dignity. Functions like this golf tournament were long overdue and I urged the Muzenda family to keep the good work in ensuring that this great man is remembered," she said.
Dr Muzenda loved the ZCC Mbungu music and in his honour, the band performed throughout the function.
