'Too many thieves in government,' says Mphoko

Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko says there are too many thieves in government who are also jostling for power.

Mphoko said this while addressing people at Kings Mine in Mashava as he wrapped up his tour of Masvingo province. Vice President Mphoko says Zimbabweans are going through difficult situations due to the poor performance of the economy but political leaders are busy jostling for power.

He says leaders must give attention to bread and butter issues instead of playing power games.

"Leaders need to be pre-occupied with spearheading the revival of the economy and if those in key positions put their minds together, the fortunes of Zimbabwe can be turned around.

"We are so hungry as a country, yet we have so much. We are fighting for positions and stealing from people. If we work together we can turn around the fortunes of this country," said Mphoko.

While Zimbabwe boasts of being number one in Africa in terms of the literacy rate, the feat is not being reflected in the way the economy is being run.

Turning to the performance of the Great Zimbabwe University, Mphoko applauded the institution's management for being innovative and acquiring several properties to ensure students have proper learning facilities.

The university was given a site to build in 2007 but building is yet to commence due to lack of funding.

The Vice President toured the facilities that the university has acquired and renovated.
