A TEENAGER who ran amok and burnt a kitchen hut following a misunderstanding with his stepmother will perform 210 hours of community service for malicious damage to property.

Vincent Mugande, 18, of Gwakwe village under Chief Mathema was yesterday convicted on his own plea of guilty.

He was sentenced to six months imprisonment by Matabeleland South provincial magistrate-in-charge Willard Maphios Moyo.

Two months of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within that period.

The remaining four months were also suspended on condition that he performs 210 hours of community service at Sabiwa Secondary School.

The teenager burnt the hut following an undisclosed misunderstanding with his stepmother.

The property that was burnt was valued at $598 and included a cupboard, blankets and kitchen utensils.

Mugande whose mother died some time ago, told the magistrate that he burnt the kitchen hut because he was fed up with living at his father's homestead following the alleged misunderstanding.

"I committed the offence because I wanted to go away and stay with my aunt in Blanket Mine. I just wanted to make sure I burnt that kitchen hut before I left my father's homestead," he said.
