Buhera South MP Joseph Chinotimba has asked the government to give money to the Grain Marketing Board so as to soyurce seeds in order to loan to the farmers instead of the farmers always approaching banks top get loans for farming.
Chinotimba made the remarks in parliament on Wednesday.
Asking a question directed to the Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development, Joseph Made the inputs that he gave to communal areas, will end up being a waste due to continued dry spell.
"We are saying, instead of people who have vast pieces of land going to banks to get loans where they already are indebted for three years now, is it not possible that you empower GMB by giving it money so that it buys seed and gives to farmers for contract farming?" said Chinotimba.
"I realise that the more people go to borrow money from banks; the chance that they end up not being able to approach the banks because they already owe money to the banks for the past three years."
Chinotimba said other countries are getting subsidies but Zimbabwe is not doing that.
"Is it not possible that farmers go and get inputs from GMB and places like that, for people who cannot go and get loans from the banks so that they can manage to plough and get their own food?" he asked.
