President Robert Mugabe says the availability of adequate infrastructure is a necessary condition for the economy to take-off.

Mugabe made the remarks at the official opening of the Harare International Airport Road in Harare today.

He noted that the country has been under siege for almost a decade and a half, adding that there is need to work extra hard to meet set targets.

Mugabe highlighted that work on the Harare International Airport Road started in 2009 within the context of a public private partnership between the Harare City Council and a foreign private developer.

The President expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development for responding positively to the call by government to take over the project after it had stalled.

"May I therefore express my gratitude to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development for responding positively to the call by my government, not only to take over this Harare International Airport Road Project after it stalled, but also by giving fresh implementation impetus to today's ceremony," said President Mugabe.

President Mugabe noted that infrastructure development is expensive, hence whenever such projects are undertaken, the nation must demand that the product be of high quality, durable and give value for money once completed.
