HAVING been incensed by her son's wayward behaviour, a Chisumbanje woman disowned her son in court on Tuesday. Thandiwe Sigauke, a liberation war veteran from Machona Village in Chief Garahwa's area approached the courts seeking protection from her wayward son, Tinashe Dube, whom she accused of causing mayhem at her farm as well as selling her property.
She also accused her son of extorting large sums of money from her. Chipinge magistrate, Ms Sharon Chipanga presided over the case. "Your Worship, I am a war veteran and I own a plot for agricultural purposes. My son requested to work for me on my farm to earn a living.
"I was initially reluctant to employ him because I know him very well as a problem child, but my relatives pressed me to employ him since he was idle. They said I should help him to raise money to pay his lobola. "I ask for the blessings of this court to put to an end our relationship. He is no longer my son. I don't want to be his mother anymore.
"He persistently insults me with vulgar language and is demanding too much money from me. Let him stay away from my plot with his family and I will stay with mine.
"He demands an amount of $1 200 from me despite the fact that he sold my building materials without my consent. He is also claiming the sum of $800 for every task his wife performed at my home, which is too much," she said. In respond, Tinashe denied all the allegations and dismissed his mother's claims as false.
He claimed that her mother had failed to pay him together with other employees their dues. "Your Worship, my mother is lying. I admit that I sold the property and building materials and she is the one who gave me the permission to do so. I used the money to settle outstanding debts that had been accrued at the farm," he said.
Concerning the payment of his wages, Ms Chipanga advised Tinashe to approach the Labour Court for redress. Ms Chipanga said Sigauke could not stop being Tinashe's mother because of the dispute between the two.
"You cannot say you are not related, it is a fact that cannot be washed away. You are still his mother and you cannot run away from that fact," said Ms Chipanga. However, the magistrate granted the protection order. Tinashe was ordered not to threaten and insult his mother. He was also ordered to vacate his mother's plot by December 4.
