Police dismiss whatsapp accident claims

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has dismissed as false messages circulating on the social media alleging that 70 students from Mutare Boys High School have died following a bus accident.

The social media was awash with messages alleging that 70 students from Mutare Boys High School perished when the bus they were travelling in overturned in Macheke.

Police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi dismissed the reports saying no such accident was recorded and urged people to desist from causing panic.

"We want to make it clear that the messages circulating are not true. No such an accident was recorded," he said.

The tide of false information and rumors has become synonymous with the social media.

The trend has seen mounting calls for regulations to curb such uncalled for behaviour.

Some have highlighted the need for technology which traces where the message originated from.
