Local universities have been challenged to take the lead in coming up with inventions and innovations that can help change the face of the country's industry.
This came out when Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo was commissioning a library extension at Chinhoyi University of Technology.
The growth and development of a university is measured by patented researches and the provision of solutions to community challenges.
Professor Moyo says Zimbabwe's challenges in industry can also in a way be solved by universities through inventions and innovations.
Mines and Mining Development Minister Walter Chidhakwa who also witnessed the commissioning of the library reiterated the need for innovations.
Chidhakwa noted that research is also critical in modern mining technology but not much has been done to develop new software for the mining sector.
The library wing was completed through a partnership between the university and Zimplats which chipped in with US$84 000 towards the project.
The new north wing library extension will provide space for an additional 120 students.
