Harare West MP Jessie Majome who was holding the women's rights defender award has announced that she has handed over the award to a new winner Isaiah Mureriwa.
"Succession can succeed in Zimbabwe! On Friday 4 December my reign as Zimbabwe Women Lawyers' Association Lawyer Women's Human Rights Defender of The Year 2014 ended as I happily handed the trophy to Advocate Isaiah Mureriwa for 2015," she said.
"Mureriwa, earned for the landmark Mildred Mapingure case that got damages against the government for wrongful and negligent failure to allow her access to terminate a pregnancy resulting from rape. Congratulations man of quality not afraid of equality....and Mildred Mapingure."
She said her 2014 award was for, among other things being the 1st woman lawyer in Zimbabwe to be elected directly to Parliament and using that space, also of being the only woman lawyer in Parliament, to advance women's human rights.
"Thank you Harare Westerners for voting for me without which I would not have that distinction. In my keynote address I urged women lawyers to keep the bar high and the profession noble, and to enjoy the privilege of it," she said.
