A 32-year-old vendor in Chitungwiza was left with a fractured leg by his workmate following a heated argument over R3 he owed him, the court heard.

Zivanai Kachidza (25) of Unit G has since appeared in court to answer to assault charges before Chitungwiza magistrate Mrs Renika Dzikiti.

Kachidza denied the charges and was remanded out of custody to Monday for trial continuation. In his defence, Kachidza said it was the complainant Shingirai Manyowa (32) of the same area who attacked him.

"The complainant hurled obscenities and tried to hit me with an empty beer bottle. He attempted to kick me and slipped resulting in the injury," he said.

However, Manyowa refuted Kachidza's claims telling the court that he pushed him into a trench.

"He came to my workplace demanding his R3 and when I told him that I did not owe him, and he vowed that someone was going to die. He pushed me into a trench and I sustained a fractured left leg," said Manyowa.

The prosecutor, Mr Donald Mudadirwa told the court that on June 16 and at around 6pm, Manyowa was at his workplace adjacent to Engen Service Station at Makoni shops. Allegations are that Kachidza came demanding the money he was owed by Manyowa.

Manyowa told him that he does not owe him anything and this angered Kachidza who became violent.

And in a fit of rage, Kachidza threatened to kill Manyowa if he failed to give him his money.
