An analyst Peter Razika has said Zimbabwe now needs new blood and should be spared perpetual blackmail by people who believe that being a war veteran is an open cheque to hold people hostage.

He said going through Mugabe's closing remarks at the Victoria Falls conference, one cannot help but admire his grasp of the goings on in Zanu-PF  in relation to the succession battle.

"One constituency that has been put on ice is the war veterans cluster," he said.

"It is true and correct that at independence all liberation war fighters were demobilized meaning that they were decommissioned and some joined the civil service while others joined civilian life. Now for people to still demand preferential treatment because they are war veterans is taking people as fools because the gun minus people support was never going to win the war. The country needs new blood and should be spared this perpetual blackmail by people who believe that being a war veteran is an open cheque to hold people hostage."

He said Zimbabwe belongs to all citizens and nobody deserves preferential treatment on account of their war record.

"How do you convince an unemployed 35 year old born free that you are special on account of your participation in the war of liberation?" he asked.

"The country will move forward if positions of leadership are through merit and not by how many bullets one fired during the war."
