A Harare man allegedly assaults his disabled wife whenever he comes home drunk knowing well that she cannot retaliate, a Harare Civil Court heard on Tuesday. Joseph Cleopas allegedly assaults his wife, Trinity Chuma in front of their children and insults her using vulgar words.

Chuma, who was seeking a protection order against Cleopas, told magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa that her husband took advantage that she was disabled and abused her knowing that she could not take any action.

"He is my husband and each time he comes home drunk, he assaults me, knowing that I cannot do anything," she said. "He also insults me in front of our children. I have made several reports to the police about his abuse but he keeps on abusing me when we get home," Chuma said.

She also told the court that Cleopas imbibes illicit brews that induce maniac behaviour in him. Cleopas did not deny the allegations. He asked for forgiveness but blamed it on alcohol.

"I would be drunk when I abuse her and I will not be able to control myself. I will not hurt her again," he said. Mrs Gofa ordered Cleopas to stop assaulting, insulting and threatening his wife and to keep peace with her at all times.
