A 28-year-old commuter omnibus driver allegedly attempted to run over a police officer as he tried to evade arrest for picking passengers at an undesignated point in Chitungwiza.

Maxwell Subili of Cherutombo in Marondera employed by Kadzomba Tours drove the bus for a distance of more than 5km while Constable Misheck Makosa (24) clung on to the wipers and bumper.

Subili was not asked to plead to attempted murder charges when he appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo.

Mr Murendo remanded him to January 11 on $50 bail.

The court heard that Cst Makosa of Tynwald, Harare stationed at Chitungwiza Police Station was on duty of the district reaction group at around 9am in the company of Constables Shainai and Kapfiso.

The officers were at Makoni Shopping Centre on December 20 when Cst Makosa spotted Subili loading passengers at an undesignated point near a Marondera rank.

It is alleged that Cst Makosa warned Subili of the unbecoming behaviour, but he did not take heed.

After some few minutes, Cst Makosa approached Subili and stopped in front of his vehicle, a Toyota Hiace indicating that he was under arrest.

The court heard that Subili allegedly drove towards Cst Makosa in attempt to run over him.

Cst Makosa jumped and clung to the vehicle's wipers and locked his legs on the bumper.

Subili allegedly drove his bus with the officer hanging on for a distance of about 10km.

Cst Makosa was rescued by his workmates who boarded a private car and went after Subili.

Subili allegedly stopped after his vehicle was blocked leading to his arrest.

Mr Norman Koropi prosecuted.
