Man jailed 5 years for stealing plastic bag

A Harare man has been jailed for effective four and a half years in jail for stealing a plastic bag on Christmas Day.
Callisto Gumbochuma snatched the bag from a woman and stabbed her while she was walking along Jason Moyo Avenue around 9pm.
The plastic bag had food items.
He pleaded guilty in court.
"in court he said ": I did not know that robbery and what I was doing was unlawful" he said.
That prompted the magistrate, Tendai Mahwe to say "Ignorance of the law is not an excuse and as a result robbery cases are on the rise so deterrent sentence will be appropriate,".
Gumbochuma was sentenced to five years with six months suspended for five years.
