The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development responsible for cropping Davis Marapira has admitted that some land reform programme beneficiaries are selling irrigation equipment.

He said their actions were threatening the country's food security.

According to a ZBC report today, he said the culprits are removing pumps, as well as computer and gear boxes from the centre pivot irrigation equipment and leaving the land targeted for irrigation to lie idle.

He says among the worst affected provinces are Mashonaland West and Masvingo.

"We are in the process of investigating these culprits and we will prosecute them through the Ministry of Lands and Rural Resettlement," said Marapira.

He said those found  guilty should have the land repossessed and given to farmers who can replace the equipment and put the land to good use.
