WARRIORS and ABSA Premiership's side University of Pretoria shot-stopper Washington Arubi's mother allegedly told his estranged wife that she will receive the money she is claiming for maintenance when she is in her grave, The Weekender reported.
The threats came after the national team goalkeeper was arrested last Saturday in Mutare and spent two nights at Mutare Central Police Station cells for defaulting in paying maintenance.
He was arraigned before Mutare Magistrates' Court on Monday.
The former Dynamos and Highlanders goalkeeper appeared before magistrate, Mr Poterai Gwezhira and through his lawyer, Mr Farai Matinhure of Gonese and Ndlovu Legal Practitioners, pleaded guilty to the charge.
He was sentenced to four months imprisonment, wholly suspended on condition that he pays the maintenance by June 30 this year for his two sons, Nathan and Washington Junior.
However, in a brief interview with Arubi's ex-wife, Iris Nyandoro after the court verdict, she confirmed that Arubi's mother threatened her over the phone.
"Yes, it is true. She first phoned my aunt and told her that I would only get the money for maintenance in my grave. Washington's sister, Spensia also called me saying the same thing. I do not know what they are planning, but somehow I fear for my life while at the same time I have kids to look after," she said.
Repeated efforts to get comments from Arubi's mother and sister, Spensia were fruitless at the time of going to Press as their given mobile numbers were not available.
According to the State papers, Arubi defaulted paying a total of $4 914 to Nyandoro (26) which was supposed to have been paid in monthly batches of $650.
It was the State case that on January 30, 2015 at Mutare Civil Court Arubi was ordered to pay $650 per month for the upkeep of his two sons.
The accused, however, defaulted to pay in some of the months, while in some months paid half instalments which saw the figure ballooned.
Arubi's lawyer in mitigation said his client was committed to pay the maintenance adding that the goalkeeper was the sole breadwinner in his family.
"Things are not well in South Africa as we are all aware and my client is a first offender. The fact he paid in some of the months and other months he paid half the figure shows that he was committed and serious to maintain his children.
"My client is also a breadwinner, responsible for the upkeep of his parents and siblings and if he is locked up here his dependants will suffer,'' he added.
However, the court went in stitches when Arubi told the court that he was in a pain after being bitten by fleas during the two nights he slept behind the bars.
Mr Walter Saunyama prosecuted.
