Mango trees splits family

A ROW over mango trees between a 73-year-old woman and her grandchildren has spilled into the courts with the former seeking a protection order.
Having had enough visits from her grandchildren who come to enjoy the fruits in her compound, Emelina Makarara of Makarara Village under Chief Marange approached the courts asking for a protection order against the minors' fathers, David, Bernard and Simbarashe Marange.
Emelina who was in the company of her daughter, Memory Marange, said the respondents were disrespectful.
They appeared before Mrs Anne Ndiraya, who ordered the three men to stay away from their mother's premises.
Emelina said David last week came in the company of his children to destroy the mango trees and fruits that her husband left before he died.
"My sons teamed up with their children early this month to come to my place and harvest my mango fruits as well as destroying the tree branches. I pray that the court grants me my wish, because I have already disowned them for disturbing me and failing to respect me as their mother. They are all grown ups and they should live their own lives away from my homestead and my mango trees," she said.
When asked if they had anything against their mother's application, David who was speaking on behalf of his two brothers said," Your Worship, this is our mother and because of her old age, barring us from getting close to her is not easy at all. We need to check on her from time to time.
"We were all shocked when we received the summons and still we haven't got answers as to why a mother could do that to her own children. Surprisingly, she even chases her grandchildren from getting close to the mango fruits left by their grandfather. Something is wrong somewhere," he said.
When interviewed outside the court, Simbarashe said all this was meant to cause confusion in the family.
"We suspect that evil spirits are being used by our relatives since it is now our turn to the Marange chieftaincy. They want to cause confusion," he said.
In her ruling, Mrs Ndiraya, said: "You are hereby ordered to stay away from your mother's mango trees."
