Ellen Chiweshe has entered into Zimbabwe's history books by being the country's first ever female air commodore in the Air Force of Zimbabwe.

Chiweshe has been promoted from group captain to become Zimbabwe's first ever female to take up such a high position in the air force.

She was conferred with her new rank at a ceremony held at the AFZ headquarters in Harare.

Air Commodore Chiweshe encouraged other female officers to work hard since the military is a male-dominated dominion hard to penetrate.

"It was very tough as the military is dominated by male officers and it is through hard work. I am very happy that the system has recognised me," she said.

Air Marshal Perence Shiri, who presided over the rank conferment ceremony, says the AFZ has made major strides in promoting gender equality in its ranks.

"Air Force of Zimbabwe is geared to recognising the work of female officers and the sky is the limit. This is the first time that we have promoted a female air commodore," said Air Marshal Shiri.

Born in 1967, Air Commodore Chiweshe joined the AFZ in 1988 and rose through the ranks and was promoted to the rank of Group Captain and was appointed Director of Finance in 2009, a post she held until the time of her latest promotion.
