Used condoms block sewer plant

Used condoms and other non-degradable materials are constantly clogging equipment at Harare's Crowborough Sewage Treatment Plant.
The issue of disposal of condoms after use has come under the spotlight.
The Environmental Management Agency says the problem is caused by residents' failure to separate waste at household level.
"It is sad that there are citizens who are negligent to the extend of flashing their used condoms. Separation of waste is really important, people have to know that it saves time and protect the environment," says EMA publicity manager Steady Kangata.
It is not only condoms that find their way into the drainage system but plastics, kaylites, diapers and other non-degradable wastes.
Meanwhile, 1 600 litter bugs were arrested last year with 327 of them being from Harare.
Twenty of them were arrested in the first few days of 2016.
