Police have intercepted over 257 bales of second hand clothes being smuggled into the country since the beginning of the year 2016.

The smuggled goods are said to be mainly coming in through the country's porous border posts.

ZRP spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba says since January the 2nd, the law enforcement authorities have recovered 257 bales of second hand clothing estimated at a value of over US$80 000.

Senior Assistant Commissioner Charamba says a vehicle was intercepted by police in Marange and the driver who refused to stop as instructed by police ran off into the darkness abandoning the lorry.

Police say they will descend heavily on the smugglers who are bringing in second hand clothes against government's stance to ban importation of such goods which have impacted negatively on the local textiles industry.
