Solomon Madzore the MDC-T Youths Assembly president was on Monday arrested in connection with the murder of Inspector Petros Mutedza.
Madzore had been on the run for four months.
Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena last night confirmed the arrest.
"I can confirm we arrested him (Madzore) in relation to the murder of Inspector Mutedza. He has been on the police wanted list for a long time," he said.
However, in a statement yesterday the MDC-T Youth Assembly said reasons for Madzore's arrest "are unknown".
"The Youth Assembly wishes to state that Solomon Madzore is innocent, he has not committed any crime . . . This is an obvious ploy to weaken the Youth Assembly ahead of the coming elections," read part of the statement.
Insp Mutedza, who was stationed at Borrowdale Police Station and attached to the police Reaction Group, died on May 29 this year after being hit in the head by a brick by suspected MDC-T youths.
He - together with other police officers - had gone to investigate an illegal meeting the youths were holding at Glen View 3 Shopping Centre.
His colleague sustained injuries.
A post-mortem carried out by Dr Gabriel Abvero attributed the cause of Insp Mutedza's death to severe head injuries, a depressed skull and damaged brain due to the assault.
