More than 200 unregistered vehicles have been impounded by the police in the last two weeks under an operation code-named "Mushikashika Kwete". During the operation, the police, Central Vehicle Registry, Zimbabwe Revenue Authority and Zimbabwe National Road Administration officials are also targeting vehicles with fake registration books, unlicensed, those without registration number plates and motorists who evade paying duty.

Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba yesterday said as long as the vehicles were not properly registered, they will not be allowed to be used.

She said because of reckless driving, 10 people had been run over by "mushikashika" vehicles in one month last year.

"The operation "Mushikashika Kwete" is continuing in earnest and we are not going to stop until we get rid of these vehicles, as you can see we have now recovered almost 200 vehicles," she said.

"We are not going to stop because the drivers are not taking heed of police calls. They continue to commit lawlessness on our roads without even considering that there are other people who have the right to use the roads."

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said most mushikashika vehicles owners evaded Zimra when they imported their vehicles, which led them to use fake number plates.

She said police were still working on the modalities of new traffic fines on the country's roads.

"Some of these vehicles come into the country without being cleared by evading Zimra formalities and others are actually stolen from South Africa and other neighbouring countries and their owners also commit traffic offences," said Snr Asst Comm Charamba.

"The vehicle theft squad is linked to Interpol and they can trace whether the car was properly cleared or not. If you want to engage in transport business, do the formalities that are needed or you do not have the right to carry passengers."
