A journalist and political analyst Methuseli Moyo has said constant rumours about his death or ill health dramatises how desperate Zimbabweans are for President Robert Mugabe to disappear from the scene.
"Zimbabweans feel, rightly or wrongly, that he is the source of their misery through his self-destructive econonoic and political policies and corruption by his ministers and other aides," Moyo said. "The problem is that there is so much secrecy and apparent moves to create a semblance of a very healthy Mugabe when nature tells us a 92-year-old can never be healthy."
Moyo said the uncertainty above Mugabe's personal circumstances, and his desire to die in office clearly creates a situation pregnant with an unmanaged and risky political transition, and no investor wants to risk putting millions in such a country.
The remarks came in the wake of rumours circulating that Mugabe collapsed and died in the Far East where he is on holiday with his family. The rumours have been dismissed by Mugabe's spokesperson George Charamba as lies.
