A political commentator Nelson Bushu has suggested that if President Robert Mugabe was a sensitive and people centred leader he would this time reject having the ruling Zanu PF making people and companies contribute towards his birth day but would instead advise
He said it was his dream to hear his Excellency the President Mugabe saying "Ahh what kind of person do you want to make me? You want me to be demonised by our ever-present detractors? You want to squeeze our people, parastatals and other entities again to raise what? US$800 000 for my what? Birthday? No, no, no! We can't do that."
Bushu said it would have been wise for president to say, "We just spent mega dollars on our conference in December, my family and I went on our annual holiday. Enough is enough. This is too much spending! Too much use of money when our country is in such dire need! That US$800 000 you are planning to raise for my birthday, take all that money and buy grain to feed our starving people. If anything is left from that money buy some medical supplies for our clinics... We can't make merry amidst poverty. From now on no more birthdays and other spending sprees in my name or my party's name. Let us deliver on our mandate for the people... Of course I care about their welfare. We have to be sensitive to the plight of our people... From now on our people come first..."
He said such are the leaders needed in Zimbabwe.
The ruling Zanu PF is targeting to raise $800 000 for Mugabe's birth day.
