Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa says the decision by the government to bar the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) observers from participating in any Zimbabwe elections has not changed and will remain the same in the 2018 harmonised elections.
Mnangagwa poured cold water on speculation by the private media that the EU is lobbying the UN to come up with a resolution to push Zimbabwe to allow UN observers to observe Zimbabwe's 2018 elections.
He said Zimbabwe will not entertain any EU and UN resolution to allow their observers to observe elections come 2018.
Following failure by the UNDP to participate in the 2013 elections, Mnangagwa said nothing will change in 2018, but the UNDP can only assist Zimbabwe in financial and technical capacitation to buy election equipment.
On when the biometric system will be implemented, Mnangagwa said the process has been mooted and the Zimbabwe Election Commission is expected to conduct due diligence.
The possibilities on whether the ZEC recommendations will be applied in 2018 harmonised elections will be determined on completion of the due process.
