Opposition party MDC says that Zanu-PF must begin to seriously implement electoral reforms by retiring long-serving Registrar General Tobaiwa Mudede.
The 72-year –old has overseen all the elections carried out in Zimbabwe since 1981, amid allegations of his allegiance to Zanu-PF.
MDC spokesperson Obert Gutu said that the office of the Registrar-General has been discredited and should not be actively involved in the voter registration exercise.
Gutu says that at 72, Mudede is way past the civil service retirement age of 65.
Meanwhile, the MDC also says that it does not believe the reported 800,000 new voters said to have been registered with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) since the beginning of 2015. Gutu said that what is particularly concerning about these numbers is that the new votes are said to have registered in constituencies that recently held parliamentary elections.
He questioned why such a large number of voters could have registered in only one year, when the ZEC has never really undertaken a well-publicized national voter registration exercise.
