The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development says discussions on the inevitable amendment of the Marriage Act should focus on how under-age girls who have been impregnated will be catered for.
After the historic ruling that declared child marriages illegal, there was much celebration.
The parliamentary portfolio committee on gender, however, says its discussions are now centred on complications that will arise when the Marriage Act is amended.
Portfolio committee chairperson Beatrice Nyamupinga says issues which parliament must debate in coming up with the legislation include how those girls under the age of 18 who fall pregnant are handled.
All the parties in parliament have concurred that debating the Marriage Act amendment should be a priority matter which the legislature must handle.
