A non-governmental organisation (NGO), Care International has come under fire for allegedly abusing the food assistance programmes by dishing money to villagers through eco-cash instead of distributing food to the affected areas.

Chief Nhema of Zaka in Masvingo Province has expressed concern over Care International's unorthodox food assistance operations, saying the government should investigate the NGO for allegedly serving the interest of regime change.

Thousands of people in Zaka are in need of food assistance in the face of adverse effects of climate change, and reports say Care International has ordered the affected people to buy only lines from a selected mobile company if they want  assistance.

Instead of being given food the unsuspecting villagers are being given cash through a selected mobile transfer service scheme ranging between US$10 to US$40 per month.

Chief Nhema condemned the move, saying thousands of people in areas affected by El Nino are now subjected to political manipulation by NGOs such as Care International.

The case of Care International to lure people through cash is a tip of an ice-berg as the NGO and other western sponsored donors are reported to be working in cahoots with some opposition parties to politice food handouts ahead of the 2018 harmonised elections.

Efforts to get comment for the Care International were fruitless as the Coordinator of the Programme in Zaka was not reachable.
