Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa have reportedly been told to quit Zanu PF by his supporters to avoid public humiliation.
Last Friday at a rally in Chiweshe, Grace Mugabe refered to Mnangagwa's faction by its name - Team Lacosta in one of her unrestrained attacks.
That sent shock waves within VPs camp.
"The writing is on the wall that they want him fired
"As soon as it was made clear at the Chiweshe rally, people said to him (Mnangagwa) that you cannot risk public humiliation and false allegations" the Standard reported.
"The general feeling among his loyalists is that he should quit. There is much more dignity in that as compared to being fired' said an unamed source.
"I don't think Mnangagwa himself will have problems with that but others are saying we cannot be pushed by the First Lady."
Former Zanu PF legislator Temba Mliswa said "He (Mugabe) must be a man of integrity and just fire him (Mnangagwa) and appoint the First Lady as VP."
Mnangagwa took over from Joice Mujuru who was kicked out on allegations of plotting to oust Mugabe.
