A veteran of the struggle Solomon Marembo says President Robert Mugabe is a calculative statesman whose excellent principles during and after the liberation war have made him one of Africa's revered icon.

Marembo is one of the few veterans of the struggle who rubbed shoulders with Mugabe while in prison.

Marembo also travelled with Mugabe to the Lancaster House talks in 1979.

To him, President Mugabe is an exceptional and calculative leader who also has a straightforward approach to political and economic issues.

"Whenever he came face to face with the colonial masters, Mugabe was always on his best, emerging stronger," recalls Marembo.

The President turns 92 on Sunday with the celebrations set for the 27th of February at Great Zimbabwe Monuments in Masvingo.
