A 31-year-old man, Cornwell Makoni drowned after a shock encounter with a crocodile during a fishing escapade in Banga Dam in Chirumhanzu.
Scores of people gathered a few metres from the dam waiting for the body of the deceased to be retrieved by the police sub aqua unit.
Makoni and his friend, Jackson were laying their fishing nets in the dam when tragedy struck.
The two saw a crocodile swimming next to a tyre tube of a tractor which they were using to float in water.
Although the two entered the dam knowing that there are crocodiles in the dam, when they saw the reptile in water swimming next to their tube, they panicked and the tube capsised.
However, still in a panic mood, Jackson swam safely to the river bank, while Makoni, despite being a good swimmer known for crossing flooded Shashi River, struggled to swim as he was paralysed by shock.
Makoni's other friend, Alfonso, who had remained behind cooking sadza, said he tried to rescue his friend but when he was a few metres from him, he ducked in the water and only to realise that his friend had already drowned.
The body of Makoni was retrieved by Sub Aqua Unit still intact on Sunday morning.
The deceased will be buried on Tuesday at his rural home in Chirumhanzu.
