ZimFirst President Maxwell Shumba has said his party which is a signatory to the National Electoral Reform Agenda (NERA) has engaged the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions to the launch of the agenda.
"ZimFirst has been engaging other stakeholders. The Party through its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pastor Makaza Makovore was part of meetings held in Harare to prepare ZCTU to launch to the people its initiative dubbed National Electoral Reform Agenda (NERA)," he said. "Whilst we are signatories to NERA I would like to take this opportunity to share herein our unequivocal position pertaining to the roadmap towards a lasting solution for Zimbabwe and where NERA efforts lie in the scheme of things."
He said their position as a party is clear and is summarized below: instead of a political parties grand coalition where leaders simply agree in one room to apportion positions among themselves efforts should be dedicated to building a truly people's grand coalition that must seek to achieve the following objectives, heal the anger within the masses caused by Mugabe regime's abuses, misrule and brutality, identify an overarching common cause that goes beyond mere grievances against Robert Mugabe regime or demanding electoral reform .
"The national common cause will become the defined UNITY of Purpose to serve as a national unifying driving force. The Unity of Purpose will motivate the nation towards genuine unity. The Unity of Purpose should clearly communicate the critical need for all Zimbabweans to rally around and a clear way forward to a better Zimbabwe," Shumba said.
"ZimFirst will support any effort geared towards the achievement of the two goals listed above. Removing Zanu PF from power alone is not an end that we are willing to spend time and effort on. We will support grand coalition should have a bigger picture perspective. Our position is that any discussions that do not seek to achieve these two objectives will fail towards the election and therefore we will not want to be part of something that we know for sure that it will not produce the desired results. Although it is worthy the effort but ZimFirst want to be on record that Zanu PF will not enact electoral reforms willfully and as a result we advocate for efforts to be channeled towards healing the nation and developing an agenda for Unity of Purpose."
He said in this regard they view that efforts should be dedicated towards achieving the above two critical objectives.
"Because of its limited scope we view NERA not as an end to a means but a catalyst for bigger endeavors. In our view it is an opportune moment to sow the seeds for the organic growth of a people's grand coalition. We applaud ZCTU for taking the first steps but as a party we will dedicated our efforts towards strategies which will go beyond electoral reforms," he said.
