The government has distributed a total 46 215 metric tonnes of maize to rural households who will be requiring food aid in the 2015/2016 season.
Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Deputy Minister Tapiwa Matangaidze told the ZBC News that eight rural provinces in the country have received a total 46 215 metric tonnes since October 2015.
Figures from the ministry indicate that Manicaland province has to date received 5 340 tonnes, Mashonaland Central 5 419, Mashonaland East 3 308, Mashonaland West 8 794, Masvingo 8 582, Matabeleland North 4 718, Matabeleland South 3 546 and Midlands 5 925 tonnes.
Matangaidze says government had initially allocated 6 000 metric tonnes per province, but however in recognition of the need, an additional 3 000 has been further allocated.
The Zimbabwe Vulnerable Assessment Committee report produced in 2015 had initially revealed that 1.5 million people would need food aid.
However, the ministry revised that figure upwards saying actual figures would come up after the 2015/2016 livestock and crop assessment amid indications the figure will hit 3 million.
