TWENTY people cheated death by a whisker when an Extra City bus they were travelling in veered off the road and uprooted trees, injuring eight passengers in the process.
All those who were injured, including the conductor, were treated at Victoria Falls District Hospital and discharged.
The officer commanding Victoria Falls, Chief Superintendent Jairos Chiwona, said the bus, which was travelling from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls, had 20 passengers on board.
The accident occurred at the 420km peg on Monday at about 8PM when the bus veered off the road near Chisuma turn-off, about 13 km from Victoria Falls.
"I can confirm that a Victoria Falls-bound Extra City bus was involved in an accident when the driver lost control and it veered off the road to the right into the bush. Indications are that the bus was speeding but that's subject to expert confirmation," said Chief Supt Chiwona.
He identified the driver as Austin Chindedza from Waterfalls in Harare.
Chief Supt Chiwona said the eight who were injured were "out of danger" as they had sustained minor injuries.
