Government has warned motorists to be on the lookout for fraudsters who illegally issue out counterfeit documents and masquerade as Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID) officers.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Dr Joram Gumbo, in a statement yesterday urged the public to report such suspects to the police.
"These fraudulent documents are produced by conmen who falsely claim to be working in liaison with VID officials and in the process fleece the public of their hard earned cash.
"In this context, members of the public are warned not to fall prey to these marauding conmen," Dr Gumbo said. "People are given false learners licence, certificates of competency, commonly known as Drivers Licence in the form of a blue copy and a certificate of fitness for public service vehicles, that is commuter omnibuses, taxi cabs, conventional buses, trucks and trailers."
He advised the public that learners licences and certificates of competency were only issued out to a person who successfully underwent a full VID test at a VID testing centre. "Any documents issued without undergoing a VID test, inspection and examination are not valid and therefore illegal.
"Documents that include certificates of fitness are also issued to vehicles after a successful VID inspection.
"Both the issuer and the recipient of such fraudulent documents shall be guilty of an offence," he said.
Dr Gumbo urged people to report anyone asking for a bribe or consideration to obtain learners licence, certificate of competency, certificate of fitness, storage fees, overloading fee and voluntary inspection on their toll free numbers: 008013121,080131122 and 080131123.
