About 250 families in Zimuto, who were facing starvation, have received food aid from the Masvingo North National Assembly member, Davis Mharapira.

The villagers' plight was highlighted by the state media with reports that they are now surviving on left overs from the nearby Zimuto Mission School

As an interim measure to assist the villagers as they await assistance from the government, the local legislator, Mharapira handed over food supplies to 250 families in the area.

The families received maize meal and cooking oil, among other food items.

Among those who benefited were visually impaired people from Capota, who said their food situation has worsened since they are unable to travel to nearby irrigation schemes and work for food as others do.

Masvingo Senator, Clemence Makwarimba applauded Mharapira for assisting the people, adding that more needs to be done to help the disabled to acquire food.

Mharapira told the villagers that the long term solution to ending the food shortages is by ensuring that rural folk have access to irrigation facilities.

As a means to assist with the food shortages, the government has slashed the prize of grain from US$24 to US$15 per bag.

190 000 families from Masvingo Province have registered for food aid.
