A SUSPECTED thief from Mwenezi allegedly stoned his accomplice to death following a dispute over how to share groceries they had stolen from a local shop, police have confirmed.

Braveman Mudaniri, 26, of Gonyami Village under Chief Mawarire allegedly hit Vakai Mpofu, 42, of the same village on both hands and legs with a guitar, then struck him with a stone on the abdomen.

Mpofu sustained serious hand, leg and head injuries from the attack. Fellow villagers found him lying unconscious in a pool of blood at his home and he died as they were still looking for transport to rush him to Mwenezi District Hospital.

Acting Masvingo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector, Kudakwashe Dehwa, said the incident occurred on Wednesday at around 8AM.

"I can confirm receiving a report of a murder case from Mwenezi where a man struck her friend to death following a dispute over sharing groceries that they had stolen the previous night. The accused was arrested and will appear in court soon facing murder charges," said Asst Insp Dehwa.

He said on Tuesday night, Mudaniri and Mpofu allegedly went to Musajerema Business Centre in the same area and stole some groceries from one of the shops.

The following day they met at around 8AM, at a secluded place in the same village intending to share the loot.

They then had a misunderstanding over who was supposed to get a bigger share. Mudaniri then fatally attacked Mpofu.

Investigations revealed that the groceries that the two were fighting over had been stolen from Musajerema Business Centre the previous night.
