Traffic cops up for extortion

Three Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers allegedly extorted money from motorists during an operation that was meant to clear illegal transport operators.
Innocent Nduna, 30, Prosper Takawira, 24, and Abel Nyongani, 24, were charged with extortion when they appeared before Harare magistrate Elijah Makomo yesterday.
They were remanded in custody to today for bail consideration.
Prosecutor Peter Kachirika alleged that on March 12, the trio were deployed in the city during an operation targeting motorists found contravening traffic regulations dubbed Mushikashika Wapera.
In one instance, Nduna observed a complainant dropping off a passenger at corner Robert Mugabe and Julius Nyerere Way from his Honda CRV.
Nyongani arrested the complainant for dangerous parking and carrying passengers without a valid road service permit.
It was alleged that one of the accused persons told the complainant that he could only be released after paying $195.
The complainant had to call his boss one Sawa and informed him about the situation before asking for $195.
Sawa sent the money via Ecocash and complainant handed it over to the cops.
Nduna and his accomplices demanded to be dropped off at corner Samora Machel Avenue and Second Street.
The complainant immediately proceeded to Police General Headquarters Internal Investigations Unit and lodged a complaint against the three.
On March 15, an identification parade was conducted at ZRP Harare Central and Nduna and Takawira were positively identified.
