There was drama at Gweru council when the deputy sheriff moved in to attach movable property after council failed to settle a $69 000 debt it owes its former employees.
Business came to a halt at Gweru City Council when an official from the deputy sheriff attached council's 10 service vehicles including a Toyota Hilux belonging to the director of finance and acting chamber secretary.
Service delivery vehicles were also towed away.
Council management and their employees could not do anything as they watched haplessly as their vehicles were being towed away.
The official from the deputy sheriff was, however, manhandled and threatened by council security when he tried to attach a cash in transit vehicle that was collecting cash at the council revenue hall.
As a result, two council security officers were later picked up for questioning over the alleged assault by the police.
The vehicles were attached by former Go Beer employees who dragged council to court demanding $69 000 in outstanding salaries, bonuses and back pay.
Go Beer Breweries was owned by City of Gweru and was closed down in 2014 due to financial constraints.
The company had 13 beer halls and many outlets in and outside Gweru.
