Police out in full force over Easter

The Zimbabwe Republic Police will deploy more policemen countrywide during Easter Holiday to curb crime and to ensure that sanity prevails on all major roads.

In a statement yesterday, chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba (pictured right) warned motorists to observe road rules and regulations.

"The Easter holiday is upon us, the Zimbabwe Republic Police would like therefore to warn all motorists to observe road rules and regulations and ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy for carrying passengers and goods," she said.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said experience had shown that speeding, human error, misjudgment, overloading and defective vehicles contributed to accidents.

"Special care should also be taken to ensure that tyres are in good condition before embarking on journeys.

"We are appealing to all motorists to drive safely during this Easter holiday," Snr Asst Comm Charamba said.

She said the police would be out in full force on all the country's major roads and urged all motorists to co-operate with policemen when stopped at a roadblocks to avoid inconveniences.

She said police would be checking for various traffic offences, targeting stolen cars, minerals, criminals, cattle rustlers and drug traffickers.

"The ZRP would be working hand in glove with other stakeholders such as the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe and Vehicle Inspection Department to make sure this Easter holiday is accident free," she said.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba urged public transport operators to employ drivers of the stipulated age, with all the requisite documents to drive public service vehicles and to ensure that their vehicles were roadworthy.

"Be warned that police will impound all unroadworthy vehicles and take them off the road in order to save lives. Please co-operate with the police as they discharge their duties," she said.
