Mwonzora, gone too soon

THE St Matthias' Tsonzo headmaster, Mr James Mwonzora, who was involved in an accident as he chased after two vehicles that sped off after purportedly collecting two girls from the boarding school recently, died on Monday night at West End Clinic in Harare.
He succumbed to serious head and chest injuries sustained in the accident.
He was 53.
At the time of going to Press, Mr Mwonzora's body was expected to arrive at Nyaradzo Funeral Parlour in Mutare on Wednesday before being taken to St Mathias' Tsonzo High School for a church service on the same day.
Burial at his Nyanga rural home was expected on Thursday.
Mutasa District Education Officer, Mr Zachariah Chikwangwani, confirmed the death of Mr Mwonzora.
"It is sad news indeed. We all thought after initially surviving the accident he would make it, but he died on Monday evening," said Mr Chikwangwani.
Manicaland Provincial Education Director, Mr Edward Shumba, paid his condolences to Mr Mwonzora's family.
"We sincerely mourn with the bereaved family and empathise with them in this difficult moment.
"It is sad that he had to go through all that pain and finally breathe his last. Such is life and we can only commiserate with the bereaved family," said Mr Shumba.
Member of National Assembly for Mutasa Central, Mr Trevor Saruwaka, who closely worked with Mr Mwonzora over the years, described him as a fine man with a passion for excellence.
He said he left an indelible impact on the Manicaland community, especially in Mutasa District.
Mwonzora, who was also the Manicaland Youth Games team general manager, led Mutasa District outfit, Africa Trust to Division Two championship and subsequent promotion into Division One.
A fatherly gesture by Mr Mwonzora to chase after two vehicles that sped off after collecting two girls from the boarding school during the wee hours of March 6 ended in tragedy after the Toyota Hilux he was driving veered off the road and plunged in a ditch, killing one school guard on the spot, while seriously injuring the headmaster and the other guard on board.
The accident happened at the 41km peg along Mutare Nyanga Road.
Mr Mwonzora was all along admitted at West End Clinic in Harare after he sustained head and chest injuries as well as a broken leg in the accident which killed Uzler Nenohwe (24), the school guard who was in the loading box when the accident occurred.
The other guard, Greatness Mkwindidza (30), who was on the passengers' seat, was saved by the air bag. He sustained minor injuries and was discharged from hospital on the same day.
The Toyota Hilux owned by St Mathias' Tsonzo High School, which was being driven by Mr Mwonzora rolled twice and landed on its wheels.
