Warriors striker - Nyasha Mushekwi reportedly refused to start against Swaziland on Friday in protest over the mysterious inclusion of his ex-wife in the technical set up.
The woman was travelled with the team from Harare causing unbearable discomfort to the China- based player.
She was booked as Mrs Mushekwi.
His refusal to start the game forced coach Kalisto Pasuwa to make last minutes changes.
Mushekwi told team head of delegation Felton Kamambo who then alerted Zifa boss Philip Chiyangwa.
An emergency meeting was then held at Esibaye Lodge.
Chiyangwa was told that the inclusion of the woman would tarnish his image.
"A decision was made to send the lady back home on the first flight out of Swaziland on Friday morning, but Pasuwa had already made the decision to alter the starting line-up.
"The lady has strong links to a high ranking Zifa board member."
"It's still not clear what role she was playing in the delegation, with some saying she was spying on potential match-fixing , while some said she was a media consultant.
"There is also talk of a role in the medical team, which I doubt" said a source who was part of the delegation."
