AN education inspector who allegedly killed his wife - a lecturer at the Midlands State University - last month allegedly hired two hitmen to kill her suspected boyfriend and bring his eyes as proof of the hit.
Fred Shavi, 68, of Southdowns Suburb in Gweru promised the duo money and a vehicle. Shavi first appeared in court in February charged with the murder of his wife, Netsai Ncube.
Yesterday he appeared before Gweru Magistrate Tayengwa Chibanda facing one count of incitement to murder.
Shavi - a Midlands provincial education inspector with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education - was not asked to plead.
Chibanda remanded him in custody to April 14.
Shavi is expected back in court on April 11 for the alleged murder of Ncube.
Chibanda advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.
Prosecutor, Lloyd Mavhisa told the court that on February 22, Shavi approached Mtokozisi Dube and Gift Lunga at Insukamini, Lower Gweru and hired them to kill Prosper Maburo for him.
"Shavi complained to Dube and Lunga that Maburo was having an extra marital affair with his wife, Ncube," said Mavhisa.
"Shavi promised to pay the duo $600 each and a vehicle if they killed Maburo. Dube and Lunga reported Shavi to Gweru Rural Police who set a trap for him."
The court heard that the police called Maburo before informing him of the alleged plan to murder him.
"The police requested him to disappear from Gweru so that Shavi would be made to believe that Maburo had been killed," said Mavhisa.
The court heard Shavi called his hired guns and requested them to pluck out eyes out from Maburo's corpse and bring them to him as proof that he was dead.
"Maburo and the police got a goat's eyes which they intended to give to Shavi.
"Dube and Lunga informed Shavi that Maburo was dead. They asked him to bring the money and vehicle. They said Maburo's eyes were ready for collection.
"Shavi deposited money into Dube's EcoCash account and told the pair they should use it for transport from Insukamini to Gweru. He told them to drink beer with the change," said Mavhisa.
He also gave them $10 which was to be used for transport to kidnap Maburo and dispose his body after plucking out his eyes.
The court heard that as soon as Shavi heard Maburo was dead, he killed his wife Ncube and cut off communication with Dube and Lunga.
