THE Government continues paying civil servants their 2015 annual bonuses as it promised. Yesterday, government workers in the health sector and Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) were smiling all the way to the bank as they withdrew their 13th cheque. Police officers workers got their windfall on Friday last week.

Apex Council president Cecilia Alexander yesterday applauded the government for honouring its promise. "It's encouraging to see the government putting effort in the implementation of the payment of bonuses. It's our hope that it'll continue to show commitment to its workers by announcing bonus dates well in advance and releasing the money as promised.

"The announcement of dates well in advance is important to the government workers as it helps them plan ahead and motivates them," said Alexander.

Finance and Economic Development Minister Patrick Chinamasa in January announced that members of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, who include the Zimbabwe National Army and the Airforce of Zimbabwe, would be paid in February, followed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services and the health sector at the end of March.

He said the education sector, which has the highest number of employees in government, will get their bonuses in April while the rest of the civil service and grant aided institutions will be paid in May.

Civil servants who spoke to Chronicle yesterday said they were happy with the government for honouring its promise.

Police officers said messages reflecting bonuses had been deposited in their accounts started trickling in last week.

"I'm happy that the government has honoured its promise. I've been planning for this money for a long time and I'm happy that the government has made it possible for me to go ahead with my plans. The plans depended on the bonus," said a nurse who declined to be named.

A member of the ZPCS said he was elated to see his bonus reflecting in his bank account when he went to the bank yesterday.

"I want to thank the government for honouring its promise. This shows that the government is committed and I'm sure that the teachers and the other civil servants who are yet to receive their bonuses will get them soon," he said.

Anxiety had gripped the civil servants who constantly demanded that the government announces the dates when the bonuses would be paid.

In January, the government had to change pay dates for its workers with the last batch of civil servants getting their salaries on January 5.

The government later met the civil servants' representatives and gave them specific dates when their salaries would be paid.

All workers got their salaries as announced and the employer promised constant dates this year.

Last year, the government staggered the bonuses due to cash flow challenges and some workers received their 13th cheque as late as January instead of the traditional November.
