A BEERHALL owner from Mgambela in Umguza has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a patron four times with an okapi knife following a misunderstanding. Richardson Edwards, 36, allegedly stabbed Nkosiyazi Sibanda, 20, of Magwegwe suburb in Bulawayo on the left and right rib, and on the left arm and right thigh.

Sibanda is admitted at Mpilo Central Hospital, a court heard. Edwards appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Themba Chimiso and was not asked to plead to an attempted murder charge. He was remanded in custody to April 29.

Edwards said he had no intention of ending Sibanda's life. "I admit to stabbing the boy but I had no intention of ending his life your Worship. We had a small misunderstanding after he had a few drinks," said Edwards.

Prosecuting, Mufaro Mageza told the court that on Wednesday last week at around 7PM at Mgambela shopping centre, Sibanda and his friends were drinking beer at Edwards' bar when he was attacked.

"After sometime the complainant left to load some river sand and when he was coming back to join his friends, the accused person, for unknown reasons, ran towards the complainant and stabbed him several times on the left and right rib cage. He also stabbed him on the left arm and once on the right thigh," said Mageza. "The complainant was helped by his friend after he was left helplessly lying on the floor after the attack. He was then ferried to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment after a police report had been made."
