A 49-YEAR-OLD man from Nketa 9 is battling for his life in the Intensive Care Unit at Mpilo Central Hospital after he was found in a trench in the same suburb after being attacked with an iron bar.
Samson Shumba was discovered by neighbours with serious injuries, a distance away from his home on Saturday at around 6AM.
Bulawayo Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Inspector Precious Simango said initially it was believed that he was involved in an accident, but later it was established that he had been attacked.
"I can confirm we received a report of a man who was found severely injured in a trench in Nketa. Residents reported the matter as a hit and run but it was later discovered that the man had sustained severe fractures following heavy assault using an iron bar.
"Investigations are underway to find out what happened to the man who's currently in Intensive Care in Hospital," said Insp Simango.
Shumba's sister, Sinethisiwe, said initially they suspected that his brother had been hit by a car and then dumped in the shallow trench when they found him.
She said when they rushed him to Mpilo Central Hospital, doctors indicated that he had been assaulted using an iron bar.
A tenant at Shumba's house, Jessie Mukumbi said: "Whoever beat him up should have actually thought that he was dead when he dumped him in the trench. Right now he can't talk or move."
