Government has threatened to ban carelite take away food containers citing that they were littering the streets and were non re-circled while when they are burnt they produce fumes which may cause cancer.
Environmental Management Agency (EMA) National Spokesperson Steady Kangata said the government was mooting a move to stop the food sellers from packaging their food using carelite containers saying they were now a health hazard and littering the streets.
Most food outlets use the containers for customers who want to buy take away and after eating the contents they just throw away the carelites there by causing littering of the streets and the environment.
Kangata said it would be an alternative for the manufacturing of the containers using cardboard boxes which can be effectively disposed or re-circled.
He could not say when would the carelites be banned.
